Programme 05 ยท First responders on the coast

Disaster Risk Reduction & Response

A standing disaster policy, own emergency fund and trained staff that let COAST act within hours of cyclones, floods and tidal surges.

COAST's working areas are among the most disaster-prone in the world, so every branch follows a stand-by disaster policy and contingency plan. When cyclone signal 7 is raised, staff move women, children, older and disabled people to shelters, secure records and cash, and stock food, saline and light without waiting for orders.

COAST responds first from its own emergency fund, then scales up with partners such as Start Fund Bangladesh: anticipatory cash support in Patuakhali before Cyclone Remal made landfall in 2024, a community kitchen for 23,000 hot meals in the 2024 Feni floods, and emergency help for 1,699 families in the 2026 Cox's Bazar and Chattogram floods. It also channels funds to smaller local NGOs, who are often first to reach affected people.
