Economic Justice
Savings, credit, training and technical support that help coastal families build income and assets, run as a socially responsible business rather than a mere service.
COAST is not minimalist in its microfinance. Under its policy of "Giving a Human Face to Microfinance", credit is tailored to poverty reduction and social welfare, matched to local livelihoods, transparent and accountable to the members it serves, and part of a wider effort to help people claim their rights as active citizens.
Members can get relaxed repayment for unavoidable circumstances when their group agrees, and representatives of the people's organisations take part in programme management meetings at every level. Surplus income from microfinance funds COAST's core rights-based work.
Seasonal loans support beef fattening, salt production and dry-fish processing, financed with Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF). Branch offices run a computerised MIS with daily monitoring to keep the programme efficient.
